Important!
As of July 29, 2001, remote access to the UG Lab is by SSH (Secure Shell)
only. In particular, Telnet, FTP, and rsh/rlogin may no longer
be used for incoming connections. These old tools are no longer appropriate
in todays hostile Internet environment, as they have weak authentication
and/or send passwords in unencrypted form over the public network.
Linux and other free Unix users will already have SSH installed as a standard
component on their systems.
A good free SSH client for Windows is PuTTY, which can be downloaded from
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/.
Please read the documentation accessible from that link.
The Cygwin environment
for Windows also has a fully compatible suite of SSH tools as standard
components.
Another SSH client for Windows can be downloaded from
USB DoIT Software Distribution.
A complete upgrade of the workstations in Room 2128 was finished during the first week of the Fall 2001 semester. See here for details.
Every Lab user should read this to answer most questions about the Lab and how to use it.
