Running Windows 2000

If you like, you can use Windows 2000 on the workstations instead of FreeBSD. If you want to run Windows, and FreeBSD is already running, first login and use the who or w command to find out if somebody is logged into the machine over the network. It isn't very sociable to shutdown a machine that somebody else is using.

If nobody is logged in, then it is OK to boot Windows. Simply press the reset button on the front of the CPU box. During the bootstrap phase, watch for the "Type H to boot from hard drive" message. When you see this, type H. Windows should start.

Once Windows has been booted, type CTRL-ALT-DEL to log in, and use your normal UGLAB user ID and password. If your password is longer than eight characters, you may have a problem logging in. In that case, log in to FreeBSD on another system, change your password to something that is eight characters or less, and then go back and try to log in to Windows again.

Your UG Lab files are accessible from Windows via Samba file servers running on the UG lab server systems. Home directories reside on the network shares called "raid1" and "raid2". These have to be mounted under Windows before they can be accessed. For "raid1" (student files) there is an icon on the desktop that will enable you to mount your home directory. For "raid2" (faculty and project accounts) you need to have a look at the commands in the script for "raid1" and execute those same commands from the Command Prompt, changing that which needs to be changed to reference raid2 instead of raid1. (Sorry about the brevity -- I am writing this very hastily without direct access to one of the systems.)

Running JBuilder

The main thing people have asked me so far (January 2001) is how to run JBuilder. Here is the info -- I hope you found it!

The procedure is:

  1. Make sure that you have a directory named "windows" in your home directory on public.ug.cs.sunysb.edu.

  2. From a PC in the lab mount your home directory using the "Mount Home" icon on the desktop.

  3. Copy the folder C:\jbuilder_license\.jbuilder4 to H:\windows\.jbuilder4. If you have run JBuilder before you will be asked about overwriting an existing folder, this old folder should be overwritten.

  4. Run JBuilder.
